• With your defined somatic goals and informed consent as the primary guides, you are at the center of our collaborative process. The therapeutic focus is on resolving structural and visceral fascial adhesions, improving posture, and movement education. My intention is to assist you in releasing inefficient fascial and movement patterns to help you embody greater structural organization, comfort, ease of motion, and physical awareness.

Rolfing® Structural Integration was developed by Dr. Ida P. Rolf in the 1940s and 50s and came to international attention during the human potential movement of the 1960s. She was a visionary who recognized two important facts. One, the human body functions with more comfort and ease when it is better aligned in gravity. Two, fascia is the organ of structure and can be manipulated to numerous beneficial therapeutic effects. She then passed on her insights and knowledge to the next generation of structural integration educators through her teaching and writing. Over the last eighty years Rolfing® Structural Integration has developed a deep understanding of fascia and how to systematically work with the human body to effect long lasting, beneficial structural change.

Visceral Manipulation is a manual therapeutic modality which helps reestablish the inherent movements associated with internal organs and their associated tissues. This is achieved by deep anatomical knowledge, refined manual sensitivity, and precise and gentle techniques. The results can be profound and seemingly out of proportion to the gentleness of the techniques. Developed by European Osteopaths and championed by Jean Pierre Barral, D.O., Visceral Manipulation is a powerful modality in its own right. It is also a wonderful companion to Rolfing® Structural Integration.

As a Certified Rolfer, I look at the relationships among different areas of the body, rather than focusing only on a specific place. Understanding how the different areas relate to each other and gravity helps guide the Rolfing process. Through talking with my clients, careful observation, hands-on structural integration, and movement education, we explore how alignment in gravity, movement patterns, and fascia may be affecting how you feel and move.

‘Viscera’ relates to the internal organs of the body, such as the liver, kidneys, and intestines. Visceral Manipulation, or VM, is a gentle manual therapy that aids your body’s ability to release restrictions and unhealthy compensations that cause pain and dysfunction. Visceral Manipulation does not focus solely on the site of pain or dysfunction, but evaluates the entire body to find the source of the problem. The therapist feels for the altered or decreased motion within the viscera, restrictions or decreased motion between the viscera, and restrictive patterns throughout the body and then applies the manual visceral therapy techniques. Visceral Manipulation helps reestablish the body’s ability to adapt and restore itself to health.

Painful structural situations frequently have as part of their source dysfunctional movement patterns. “Tech neck” is a current day structural epidemic caused by dysfunctional movement patterns. However, some dysfunctional movement patterns are far more subtle. Using Rolfing® Movement Integration methods, you are guided to explore internal signals from your body to investigate how postural and movement patterns may be affecting your daily comfort and quality of movement.

Movement education is incorporated within VisceroStructural Integration sessions to help structure and function evolve together. Greater movement awareness can help you identify and modify dysfunctional daily movement activities, improve coordination, increase movement efficiency, and improve athletic performance. If Rolfing® Structural Integration and Visceral Manipulation help restore the hardware of the body, Movement Education helps update the software.

Myofascial release is not alternative therapy, it is actual therapy. – John F. Barnes

Myofascial Release uses sustained pressure of varying intensity, which is calibrated by the situation and your preferences, applied to the fascial system. The results are released restrictions, improvements in tissue hydration, and improved efficiency and ease of movement. Myofascial Release is an important technique used in hands-on Rolfing® Structural Integration.

As a Licensed Bodywork Therapist in Wisconsin, I offer therapeutic massage using the modalities of Visceral Manipulation and deep tissue bodywork via myofascial release to help reduce muscle tension, relieve pain, and support recovery from injury, surgery, or overuse.

Hello! My name is Craig Rypstat, MS. Thanks for making it this far. I am excited to possibly be working with you. I am a Certified Rolfer, Certified Rolfing® Movement Teacher, a Licensed Bodywork Therapist in Wisconsin, and have over one hundred hours of Visceral Manipulation training. I own VisceroStructural Integration in Madison. My intention is to help you embody a higher quality of life by aiding you in achieving your somatic goals.

A passionate lifelong learner, I have at least two decades experience with a number of activities which help inform foundational aspects of our therapeutic work together.

    These include:

These experiences have helped me develop greater somatic sensitivity, deepened the ability to see the relationships between structure and function, honed and increased the capacity to learn movement patterns, and fostered a deep appreciation for the connection between breathing, movement, and the state of the autonomic nervous system.

Whether it’s addressing a recent accident or a chronic condition, improving posture, wanting to move with more ease, or releasing unwanted psychosomatic patterns, my goal is to bring my previous and continuing professional training, knowledge of anatomy, and lived experience to our sessions to help you achieve your goals and embody a higher quality of life.
